About the artist.

Creed F. Bruce is an artist based in Portland, Oregon, with exhibitions in Oregon and California.

Creed was raised in Hanford, California. He studied at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and obtained his architectural license. His interest in art began in his early twenties as he produced architectural illustrations to help pay for college. The two-dimensional aspect of these architectural drawings appealed to Creed and led him to develop his own style of line drawings featuring a variety of subjects.

Creed’s rural upbringing in the Central San Joaquin Valley instilled an appreciation for the contrast between a horizon and the silhouette of agricultural buildings against it. His architectural experience also played a unique part, inspiring his interest in figurative works as a means to get away from the rigid structural forms of buildings.

And then theres’s anxiety. Creed is no stranger to anxiety, and it often works/forces its way in his art.

Creed lives in Portland with his wife Nancy, no kids, no pets, and a few houseplants.

Artist Statement

A large body of my work is a balance of architectural and figurative images. Architectural illustration is based in structure and I like to create images with strong silhouettes. With my figurative work, there’s more of a story component. As an atheist who loves church buildings, I see churches as grounded to the earth, similar to agricultural buildings. Some of my paintings that feature churches often include figures and an anxious tension between the people and the buildings.
